The theory developed by Englman for the propagation of temperature waves in insulators has been extended and some of his results obtained in simpler form. By analogy with problems already met in sound wave and neutron wave propagation, a method is described which enables the concept of a normal mode wave to be extended to a wider frequency range than was hitherto possible.
