The effect of vibronic interactions on the differential cross sections for excitation of a molecular state, without change of spin multiplicity, by inelastic electron scattering at high incident energies is investigated. A rule is derived for obtaining from measured cross sections some information about the symmetry species of the excited state. The relation between the general shape of inelastic electron spectra measured at forward angles and the corresponding optical absorption spectra is also discussed.
