Ferroelectric domains give rise to elastic second harmonic light scattering. This phenomenon has been studied in detail in the case of ferroelectric NaNO2 having a rather simple laminar domain structure. The observed scattering pattern consists of distinct intensity maxima and can be quantitatively explained on the basis of a wave vector conservation law. The temperature dependence of the scattering maxima has been measured. It reveals changes of both the nonlinear susceptibility and the domain thickness.
