Luminescence spectra of a series of ferroelectric chrome alums were investigated from 4.2 K to 200 K to reveal spectroscopic behaviour of the hydrogen-bonded fcrroelectrics. Distinguishing spectral anomalies of R lines and vibronics were observed at around the Curie point in the region 15,000 ∼ 13,000 cm-1. The unusual R linewidth-broadening in methylammonium chrome alum has provided evidence for the relaxation process of a Debye type involving fluctuation of spontaneous polarization. Ammonium chrome alums doped with Al3+ showed complicated, temperature-dependent R lines, attributed to a lattice-polarization interaction based on a sulphate-group disorder.
