An ideal dielectric or ferroelectric is defined as a material involving only one time constant. The equivalent circuit for a capacitor made of such a material is derived and is used to evaluate the mean square value of the noise voltage V0 developed across the capacitor terminals. The reason for an apparent violation of the equipartition law is pointed out.
