A simple model for a lossy dielectric is investigated involving a material with two time constants τ and τ1, where τ≪τ1, and the noise between the device terminals due to these losses is evaluated. The reason for an apparent violation of the equipartition law is pointed out. The discussion is valid for relatively small losses. The results are applied to ferroelectric capacitors used as pyroelectric detectors.
