Instability threshold for an array of coupled semiconductor lasers

A simple approximate expression is obtained for the critical coupling strength at which an array of N evanescent coupled semiconductor lasers will lose stability. The critical coupling decreases with increasing N but reaches a limiting value for large N which is one-half of the value for N=2.
