A discussion is given of the switching process in the ferroelectric polymer β-PVF2. The local electric fields are calculated and found to be sufficiently strong to pose difficulties for any interpretation of switching in terms of a macroscopic model of nucleation and growth. It is concluded that only a small number of monomers are required to nucleate switching, and that the crystal-amorphous boundary is likely to play an important role in this process.
