Review reveals safe single-worker blood transfusion is achievable using electronic verification systems, suggesting formal guidelines should support transitioning from the two-person rule.
Failure to verify patient identity before a transfusion is one of the most serious and preventable causes of ABO-incompatible transfusion, prompting the two-person verification principle to be proposed as the standard of care.On the other hand, the advent of electronic verification systems in clinical practice has highlighted the need to reassess this two-person rule internationally.Based on clinical evidence from the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, this paper proposes that safe blood transfusion by a single healthcare worker is achievable when a validated electronic verification system is in operation, and formal guidelines endorsing this practice should be established.(Korean J Blood Transfus 2026;37:102-106)
