Linguistic analysis reveals the grammatical functions and morphological evolution of verbal suffixes in Achaemenid Elamite inscriptions, highlighting structural syntax across royal texts.
This paper is dedicated to identifying the grammatical function of the Achaemenid Elamite verbal suffixes -r(ǝ) and -t(ǝ) in structure of the type ap-pa (DIŠú) hu-ud-da-ra “what I did” and ap-pa PN hu-ut-taš-da “what PN did”. It also includes discussions on the origin and gradual transformation of the suffixes in Achaemenid Elamite, the way the different spellings should be analysed and transcribed, and the verbs to which they attach. Moreover, attestations that might contradict the suggested interpretations have been individually discussed and for some of them new readings are proposed. The linguistic materials surveyed here are limited to the Achaemenid royal inscriptions. Consequently, the results of the analysis might be applicable only to that set of documents. This paper is part of a research on the Achaemenid royal inscriptions of Susa in the framework of the DARIOSH-Louvre Project.
