Biographical tribute reviews the archaeological career and regional legacy of Gerald Reed Gates, highlighting his contributions to heritage preservation in northeastern California.
The late Gerald “Gerry' Gates (1950-2025) worked as an archaeologist initially undertaking historical archaeology work in Southern California and for many years thereafter in northeastern California, including a lengthy tenure as the lead archaeologist on the Modoc National Forest. In his retirement years, he operated a trading post-like shop in Alturas, California. A strong family man, his pursuits included not only various heritage-related projects, but also the theatre. Of his many archaeological contributions, his establishment of a USFS curation facility, use of international volunteers on projects, and studies related to various pre-Colonial camps and workshops within the Modoc Plateau and their variability stand out.
