Laboratory study demonstrates rapid detection of asphaltene precipitation onset in model petroleum solutions, indicating higher sensitivity than traditional light scattering methods.
The precipitation onset point for a series of 0.1 g/L solutions of asphaltene fractions in toluene on adding heptane as a precipitant was studied by ultramicroscopy. This method was not used previously by other authors for determining the precipitation onset point of asphaltene fractions. The ultramicroscopic method allows rapid determination of the onset point in such model systems and is more sensitive than dynamic and static light scattering because it detects the appearance of asphaltene aggregates in the sample at their lower concentrations.
