The development and initial validation of an instrument to measure perceived competence and satisfaction in racquet sports is presented. The conceptual basis for both constructs is provided along with a review of existing measures. Results of a review panel and two field tests are reported. The field tests were implemented with samples of 163 and 208 university students enrolled in tennis, badminton and racquetball classes. The data support the development of a reliable (10-item) competence measure (Cronbach alpha =.90). Evidence for factorial, construct, content, and criterion-referenced validity for the competence measure is provided. Data for factorial and construct validity of the satisfaction measure are also presented. The revised (6-item) satisfaction measure yielded an acceptable reliability coefficient of.77. Suggestions for further development and research with the instrument are presented.
