To identify baseline clinical factors that predict DAS28-ESR remission at six months in Japanese patients with rheumatoid arthritis initiating etanercept therapy.
Registered 141 Japanese patients with rheumatoid arthritis who initiated etanercept as monotherapy (N = 34), combined with methotrexate (N = 60), or combined with non-methotrexate nonbiologic DMARDs (N = 47).
Assessed achievement of DAS28-ESR remission at six months using logistic regression analysis adjusting for gender, baseline disease activity score, methotrexate cotherapy, non-methotrexate cotherapy, and baseline prednisolone use.
Treatment retention at six months was 85.1% (120/141) overall, and was significantly higher with methotrexate cotherapy (93.3%) than with etanercept monotherapy (73.5%), while reaching 85.1% with non-methotrexate cotherapy.
Logistic regression identified baseline methotrexate cotherapy and moderate baseline disease activity (versus high disease activity) as independent predictors of achieving remission at six months.
Six-month DAS28-ESR was significantly lower with methotrexate cotherapy than with monotherapy or non-methotrexate cotherapy, while non-methotrexate cotherapy achieved lower scores than monotherapy.
