The possible origin of the complexity in the near-infrared spectra (around the single factor group allowed hydroxyl stretching fundamental) of some hydroxide crystals has recently been the subject of considerable controversy. The possibility of this structure arising from the combination of the internal mode frequencies with the lattice frequencies at the critical points in the Brillouin zone boundary is examined here in general terms.
