By adding a symmetry-breaking source term of the form Hiψγ₅τ₃ψ to the Wilson fermion action for two degenerate flavors of quarks, we provide evidence for the existence of a phase at large values of the hopping parameter κ in which both parity and flavor symmetries are spontaneously broken and which is separate from the "high-temperature" phase. This is done by means of numerical simulations of lattice QCD employing the hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm.
