A dicationic macrocycle containing two NH2+ centers can insert itself spontaneously inside bisparaphenylene[34]crown-10 to form a highly ordered, stable, 1:1 complex in solution, as well as in the solid state (see picture). The self-assembly of this superstructure, wherein the mean planes of the two macrocycles are aligned approximately orthogonally to one another, augurs well for the use of supramolecular assistance to covalent synthesis in the construction of interlocked molecular compounds beyond catenanes and rotaxanes.
