Phase modulation of the light in one leg of a Michelson interferometer, optical homodyning, is explained in terms of the physical motion of the interference fringes. The theory for visual and electro-optical observation of the fringes is presented. The experimental equipment is described and several experiments are suggested at the advanced undergraduate level.
