The 1 H, 15 N-HMBC experiment is a very useful tool for the structure determination of alkaloids. In conjunction with the computer program C ocon, we show how 1 H, 15 N-HMBC-derived connectivity information can assist in the assignment of constitution, by greatly reducing the number of possible structures compatible with a given data set. The method is illustrated for the marine natural products oroidin ( 1 ) and manzacidin A ( 2 ).
