Thioglycollage‐stimulated mouse periotoneal macrophages were cultured in the presence of minced rat tail tendon collagen fibrils. Electron microscopic examination of the cultures after 24 hours revealed phagocytosis and intracellular degradation of collagen within phagocytic vacuoles. This ability of macrophages to phagocytose collagen may be an important mechanism in the destruction of collagen that occurs during chronic inflammation.
