Summary The removal of NANA from M and N blood‐group substances results in loss of their inhibitor activities against anti‐M and anti‐N human sera respectively. In contrary, M and N blood‐group substances devoid of NANA are still inhibitors of specific lectins: anti‐M from Iberis amara and anti‐N from Bauhinia variegata. The activity of the degraded substances is not only preserved but even, in some cases, increased significantly. The Iberis amara and Bauhinia variegata lectins are not sufficiently specific to differenciate M and N substance from each other. These substances show almost the same capacity to inhibit as well anti‐M as anti‐N lectin (homologic substance inhibits a little better). M and N blood‐group substances devoid of NANA are the best inhibitors for Iberis amara and Bauhinia variegata systems. The degradation of these substances by Trichomonas foetus enzymes destroys the receptors specific for Vicia graminea and Iberis amara lectins. Bauhinia variegata receptors are not destroyed by the action of Trichomonas foetus enzymes.
