The crystal structure of glycerol and its conformation

Abstract The crystal structure of glycerol was determined by X‐ray analysis, with the aid of a direct method. Out of six possible staggered conformations of glycerol the structural investigation leads to the symmetrical aa‐conformation. This result is compared with the results of extended Hückel calculations supplemented by other considerations.
