A new porous material was prepared from a layered compound K 4 Nb 6 O 17, by using a soft-chemical method. Two-dimensional niobate sheets which were obtained from exfoliation of H + /K 4 Nb 6 O 17 were precipitated by MgO fine particles and new composites were synthesized. Porous niobium oxides were obtained by modification of the composites and they showed high photocatalytic activities for H 2 evolution from various alcohol aqueous solutions.
