The thermal desorption spectra of inert−gas ions (neon, argon, krypton, and xenon) implanted at various energies (20 eV−7 keV) into a nickel (100) crystal are reported. Particular features of the spectra are found to be relatively insensitive to the species of bombarding ion. An inert−gas diffusion process is observed at the higher incident energies and an estimate of 2.1 eV is obtained for the activation energy for substitutional neon diffusion in nickel.
