Measurements of sarcomere length in the tonic claw opener muscle and in the tonic (superficial) and phasic (deep) abdominal extensor muscles in crayfish and lobster revealed a two‐fold increase from the time of hatching to the adult stage. Initially sarcomere length is longer in tonic than in phasic muscles and the tonic muscles have a faster rate of increase than the phasic muscles.
