Na, K, Ca, Ti, and Mn atoms have been stabilized in aromatic and paraffin matrices at 55°K and studied in absorption. Metal impurities in aromatic solids such as benzene and toluene, are stable to a temperature of 120°K. Bleaching of spectral features in some hydrocarbon solids doped with Ca and Mn species indicates photochemical reactions. Many systems are characterized by simple spectra consisting of perturbed resonance transitions in the metal atoms. Several metal impurity-solid hydrocarbon combinations have progressions of bands in absorption which may be interpreted as vibronic transitions.
