Previous results obtained with a sharp boundary model on the stability of a high β theta pinch with l = 1 windings are generalized to include diffuse profiles. The encouraging sharp boundary result is found to be valid for a large class of diffuse profiles: To lowest order the system is weakly stable to the m = 1 mode.
