IN A PREVIOUS INVESTIGATION (Dempsey, 1944), changes in the oxidative enzymes and in the fluorescence of the colloid were correlated with different states of thyroidal activity. Since the publication of this article, an additional number of histochemical reactions has been applied successfully to other organs and tissues, and conditions have been established under which chemical characterizations may be obtained by the use of tissue stains (cf. Dempsey and Wislocki, 1946). Methods have also been devised whereby the functional activity of the thyroid gland can be controlled almost at will. Thyroidal activity can be regulated at predictable levels by subjecting rats to different environmental temperatures (Dempsey and Astwood, 1943). The synthesis of thyroidal hormone can be blocked completely by chemotherapeutic agents, which at the same time induce a state of extreme morphological hyperplasia (MacKenzie and MacKenzie, 1943; Astwood, Sullivan, Bissell and Tyslowitz, 1943).
