A simple theory of the interaction of topography and Ekman boundary layer pumping in a stratified atmosphere is presented, together with numerical solutions of the corresponding two‐dimensional Navier‐Stokes equation problem. Numerical results for flow over a two‐dimensional ridge confirm theoretical predictions that stratification enhances momentum coupling and produces a low‐level jet parallel to the ridge.
