New side‐on liquid‐crystalline side‐chain polymers (LCSCP's) are presented as having a systematic variation of the anisotropy of polarizability with respect to the mesogenic short axis. Starting from hydroquinone as core of the rod, the polarizability perpendicular to the mesogenic long axis is increased stepwise upon replacing hydroquinone by naphthalene and anthracene derivatives. Naphthalene derivatives with cyclohexane carboxylic acid derivatives as side parts show to be the first side‐on attached LCSCP's exhibiting a smectic phase.
