100 patients scheduled to undergo coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) at Massachusetts General Hospital between March 2005 and March 2008, comprising 50 cases with carotid stenosis ≥70% identified by duplex ultrasonography and 50 age- and sex-matched controls with <50% stenosis. Total 643 patients screened.

In patients undergoing CABG, the presence of a carotid bruit or peripheral arterial disease predicts an increased likelihood of significant carotid artery stenosis, whereas the extent of coronary artery disease does not.
