SUMMARY A follow‐up study of very low‐birthweight infants (1500g or less), born in or admitted soon after birth to the Coventry Maternity Hospital in the years 1973 and 1974, was undertaken in order to assess the survival rate and the quality of life of the survivors. Of a total of 103 such infants, 56 (54 per cent) died in the neonatal period and four more died in the first year of life. One child returned to India, apparently making good progress. The remaining 42 were examined and assessed developmentally. Their average developmental quotient was 102. One child had a mild hemiparesis; the remainder showed no significant abnormalities. The present survey will need to be continued to include the important speech/language area of development between the second and third birthdays. The frequency of adverse social factors was a feature of this group of children as a whole.
