Integral and spectral cathodoluminescence (CL) of electron irradiated ZnO ceramics is studied in a scanning electron microscope-based CL measurement system. Irradiation with 0.8 MeV electrons is not found to influence the CL behaviour while irradiation at 2.6 MeV produces quenching of luminescence. The results are discussed in terms of vacancies generated during the irradiation. The observed CL quenching is attributed to damage in the zinc sublattice.
