The sublevel phosphorescence spectra of anthraquinone originating from single site in pentane matrix are observed. Different from the spectra in hexane and in octane, the 0–0 band appears strongly for all the three sublevel phosphorescence spectra. Radiative rate constants at the 0–0 band are of the order kxr ≳ kzr ≫ kyr (x axis perpendicular to the molecular plane and z axis is along the C=O bond). This result is interpreted as due to the distortion of the anthraquinone molecule along its b3u normal coordinate.
