The attention given to teaching new mothers correct routines for sterilizing infant feeding utensils has diminished over recent years. However, research has shown that an infant is vulnerable to infection from members of the family and that its feeding utensils can act as transfer sites for pathogenic microorganisms. Specialized products and equipment are available to carry out these procedures easily and efficiently and motivational education should be afforded to each new mother. Consideration should be given to incorporating the teaching of home hygiene, with specific emphasis on the safe management of infant feeding utensils based on the hazard analysis process, as an integral part of every parentcraft programme.
