The overall thickness of several kilometers of the stacked laminas in the Martian polar zones can be understood directly in terms of the conditions necessary to liquify carbon dioxide, without any appeal to a recent origin of the Martian atmosphere. The thickness of the polar frost is consistent with a terrestrial value of the subsurface heat flux and with a differentiated Mars.
