Spectroscopy experiment reports detector calibration to measure excited-state lifetimes in germanium-70, highlighting refined constraints on nuclear structure models and nucleosynthesis.
We report ongoing work to measure lifetimes of low-lying excited states in ⁷⁰Ge using nuclear resonance fluorescence (NRF) at the High-Intensity γ-ray Source (HIγS), TUNL. Measurements were performed with the Clover Array, comprising 8 clover-type HPGe detectors and 12 CeBr₃ scintillation counters. Lifetimes of these states constrain transition probabilities and thereby inform the underlying nuclear wave functions, providing a sensitive test of nuclear structure models and bearing on astrophysical processes such as stellar nucleosynthesis. During the summer, we calibrated the detector array to ensure accurate energy readings; lifetime extraction from the calibrated data will proceed in Fall 2026. This work contributes new experimental constraints on the structure of ⁷⁰Ge and its low-lying excited-state properties.
