A novel method for shape fabrication of hollow inorganic (see Figure) and carbonaceous–inorganic composite microspheres is reported. The method, which differs from the core–shell particle engineering technique, comprises an ion-exchange reaction between ionic type resin microspheres and an appropriate metal complex or metal salt precursor, followed by pyrolysis of the resulting resin derivative in air or in an inert atmosphere.
