Microbial and physical–chemical data were statistically analyzed to determine whether variations in microbial dynamics were related to variations in physicochemical variables. These data included endotoxin, standard plate count, membrane standard plate count, acid‐fast organism, temperature, total organic carbon, free and total chlorine, turbidity, and pH measurements of samples collected from two water distribution systems. The results of the statistical analyses did not support the hypothesis that the physicochemical measurements would suffice to produce reliable predictions of microbial water quality.
