A shearing stress meter (drag plate) for general use in micrometeorological studies is described. The mechanical principle applies to a large size range, though the instrument described specifically is of 3 ft (91 cm) diameter for installation in turf sites. The drag force is measured using strain gauges, and an absolute calibration system is built into the mechanism. The resolution of the instrument is about 0·02 dyne cm−2, and it will tolerate gusts of over 10 dyne cm−2 without damage. A detailed description is also given of the installation and operating procedure, attention to which is essential for reliable measurements.
