Function analytic techniques are employed to unify and extend a number of results from classical network theory. In particular the problem of the synthesis of any linear continuous operator S on a Hilbert space His reduced to that of the synthesis of a lossless operator on H⁴. Since no specific properties of either S or H are assumed, the procedure holds for time-variable, distributed and time- discrete networks characterized in either a real or complex domain as well as the usual LLFC networks.
