This paper presents an analysis of pulsed laser emission in carbon monoxide. The excited-state populations are calculated by means of known vibrational excitation cross sections in CO-electron collisions. The time evolution of the excited distribution is described by anharmonic oscillator relaxation based on recent experimental and theoretical results on V–V energy transfer in CO collisions. Calculated results are in excellent agreement with data obtained with a transverse discharge-pulsed CO laser.
