This paper introduces a method for the design of modular product platforms (MPP) for highly integrated mechatronic products applying axiomatic design and a system decomposition into mechatronic function modules (MFM). In the first step, using an extended axiomatic design approach, the complex system is decomposed into MFM. The application of axiomatic design ensures a strong function-orientation which is required in mechatronic system development. In the second step, the MFM are designed for use in a product platform. The methodology is applied in a case study considering the design of a MPP for electromechanical steering systems for use in personal vehicles.
