A description is given of polarization interferometers developed for the measurement of optical transfer functions in monochromatic light. They are based on either single plates of calcite or Savart polariscopes. The equipment has been used to test both microscope objectives and small camera lenses, measuring either transfer functions for incoherent illumination or transfer factors for partially coherent illumination; both the modulus and phase are recorded. Agreement with theoretical values is within about 0·02.
