The antioxidant, butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), inhibited chemical carcinogen-induced pulmonary adenoma formation of the mouse under 2 experimental conditions: 1) Addition of BHA to the diet protected against pulmonary neoplasia resulting from acute exposures to 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA), benzo[a]pyrene, urethan, or uracil mustard. 2) Addition of BHA to diets containing DMBA, 7-hydroxymethyl-12-methylbenzlalanthracene, or dibenz[a,h]anthracene likewise inhibited pulmonary tumor formation.
