Twenty-six patients fitted with Lippes IUDs were examined by ultrasonic B-mode scanning of the pelvis when no nylon thread was found at postinsertion vaginal examination. In 23 patients a correct diagnosis of in utero position of the device was made. In the remaining 3, a diagnosis of extrauterine position was made and subsequently confirmed by hysterography. B-mode ultrasonic scanning is a reliable safe method of localizing contraceptive devices within the uterine cavity.
