Summary. The folate present in a mixed Western type diet consisted largely of reduced methyl forms (60%), all but 4% of these being polyglutamates of varying chain length. Formyl folates (30%), principally 5, formyltetrahydrofolate polyglutamates, comprised the next largest group, while pteroyglutamic acid itself contributed only 1.5% of the total folate activity, a figure well within the range of experimental error of the techniques employed.
