The first optical gate switch that uses phase-change material (PCM) integrated with a silicon waveguide has been demonstrated by researchers from Japan. The ‘Ovonic’ device, designed and built by collaborators at Keio University and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), shows great potential to be realised as a future large-scale, low-power optical matrix switch that will be fast enough to overcome the data rate limits of electrical devices.
