The g‐value and the most important crystal field parameters of Gd3+ in orthorhombic (D ) BaCl2, are determined at room temperature: g = 1.994 (isotropic), b = ± 90 × × 10−4 cm−1, and b = ∓444 × 10−4.cm−1. The corresponding theoretical values are g = 1.993, b = 85 × 10−4 cm−1, and b = −324 × 10−4 cm−1. A comparison of the results with values for Eu2+ and Gd3+ ions at Pb2+ sites in PbCl2, and PbBr2, is made.
