Why the study?
Do blood-pressure-regulating factors and cardiovascular pressor responsiveness differ between lean and overweight/obese subjects with or without essential hypertension?
Population
75 age-matched subjects divided into 5 subgroups: normal subjects and patients with essential hypertension.
Comparison
Infusion of norepinephrine and angiotensin II… vs Comparisons among the 5 subgroups.
Design
Cross-sectional

No differences in sodium-volume status or pressor hormones by weight in hypertension; leaves open alternative mechanisms for obesity-related BP elevation.
Do blood-pressure-regulating factors and cardiovascular pressor responsiveness differ between lean and overweight/obese subjects with or without essential hypertension?
Overweight does not appear to confer a unique aberration in body sodium-volume state, circulating renin, aldosterone, catecholamines, or cardiovascular responses to NE or AII in the pathogenesis of hypertension.
Boehringer et al. (1982) studied this question.
